Whether you work with food for a living or you cook / bake as a hobby, or are a bit of a foodie or influencer, you'll want great quality photographs of food and drink for social media. Investing in and learning how to use a camera isn't for everyone and isn't necessary: your smartphone is more than capable of taking high quality, professional level photos.
But I'm sure you've already discovered that it's not as easy as just pointing and shooting and posting straight to Instagram! There is a lot more to creating mouthwatering images than just clicking the shutter button.
I'll teach you all my tricks, tips and techniques during this live, online workshop including:
- How to unlock lots of hidden features on your phone camera, that make it behave more like a DSLR.
- How to photograph in the best kind of light.
- How to problem-solve tricky lighting conditions.
- What equipment you need (whilst making it as affordable and accessible as possible).
- How to choose the right angles and framing.
- How to style and compose the shot.
- How to edit images on your phone so that they have the WOW factor on your socials.

What to expect
The masterclass will be held via Zoom. One week beforehand all attendees will receive a link by email by which to access the class.
The first part of the class will be a talk and slideshow where I take you through everything that is involved in photographing food with a phone.
There will be short break of 15 minutes the slideshow.
The second part will be a live demonstration where you can watch along, as I put into practice everything we've spoken about.
Finally there will be a question and answer session.
Is the masterclass for iPhones only?
No, you can use any brand of smartphone. As long as it's got the normal Photo Mode and Portrait Mode, you can use it to photograph food. I use the iPhone 14 Pro but most phones share the same common features that are needed. You may need to look a few things up online during the workshop to find them on your phone but I will help with that.
My phone is 4 or 5 years old. Will it be good enough?
Older phones will be fine for overhead shots and closer shots of just the plate of food, for example. They are not so good for shots taken other angles because the lens is very wide angle and distorts the subject. For example, things close to the camera will look very big, and things in the background will look very small. More recent phones now have more 'optical zoom' and this makes quite a difference to food photography. Ideally you need 3X optical zoom to not get any distortion.
The first image was taken with the standard 1x zoom. The second was taken using 3x zoom.
You can find out online how much optical zoom your phone make and model has. You can still do the workshop with an older phone and perhaps upgrade when you are ready to.
Is the masterclass suitable for complete beginners?
Yes it's perfect for beginners or people who have had a dabble but would like to improve. For the purposes of the masterclass I assume that everyone is a beginner in phone photography and food styling and composition.
