Do you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera but find yourself stuck on AUTO because all the buttons and menus feel overwhelming? My beginner-friendly digital photography workshops are designed to help you take control of your camera and start capturing the photos you’ve always wanted – from beautiful landscapes and natural portraits to travel shots and everyday moments.

And if you’d like to take your images to the next level, I also run a Lightroom for Beginners workshop, where you’ll learn how to edit, enhance and organise your photos with ease.

You’ll find more details and upcoming dates below.

Thanks for such a well thought out introduction to using an SLR camera beyond auto! Your friendly and informal approach put us at ease, the presentation covering the theory and the basics was perfectly balanced, putting those to practice outdoors was worth the chill. Looking forward to practising and booking an Improvers lesson! Mel

Get Off Auto on your Digital Camera

Are you new to using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, using it mainly on AUTO and don't know what all the menus and buttons do? You like photography and want to be able to take creative pictures of people, landscapes, wildlife, still life and more, using the best settings and the right light. This course is for people who currently use the automatic settings on their camera, and would like to have more creative control, using settings like aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Lightroom for Beginners

This workshop will guide you through the essentials of organising and editing photos with confidence. By the end, you’ll have a solid foundation in Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Mobile. This workshop is designed for people who have outgrown simpler editing apps like Snapseed or their phone’s native editing tools and want to take their edits to the next level. This hands-on session on Lightroom breaks down the basics, giving you a solid foundation in importing, organising, and editing so you can confidently start using it.

Workshop venue

Workshops will be held in a brand new retail store and creative space with a dedicated classroom, opening in Altrincham in May 2025. There will be opportunities to practise your new skills around the lively and interesting town centre.

One to one tuition

A one-to-one photography lesson gives you personalised guidance tailored to your skill level, camera, and interests—whether that’s landscapes, portraits, food photography, or action shots. You might be wondering whether you need to buy any new lenses or a tripod and want to avoid costly mistakes? Or perhaps you've got the basics sorted but want to move your photography to the next level.

Your lesson can be a mix of 'classroom' time and practical photography at a nearby picturesque location. Unlike group workshops, you’ll get the chance to focus on exactly what you want to learn at your own pace. It’s the fastest way to build confidence with your camera and start capturing the photos you’ve always wanted!

I've loved photography for ages and was so pleased when we got our new camera, prior to a holiday! It was obvious from my first attempts that I needed expert help to quickly get to grips with all it could do! Jane's course was perfect; she helped me understand what settings to use for different types of shots, without getting lost in jargon. I feel much more confident now and am loving photographing all sorts of subjects and usually not on AUTO! I've still got a way to go though, so I may be back again soon, Jane! Carolynne

If you're not quite sure what you're looking for, we can kick off with a short no commitment call via phone or online. Then if you'd like to go ahead we'll sort out a date and time that suits us both.

I can advise how long the lesson may need to be and you can decide which to go with from the following options.

Two hour lesson £135

This is just the right amount of time for your first lesson to help prevent that feeling of overwhelm or brain fry! Or if you want to concentrate on something specific in detail.

Three hour lesson £175

Sometimes two hours just doesn't seem like long enough! If we are going to cover camera settings, do some practice shooting and then perhaps a little editing the time really flies.

From Snapshots to Great Shots £450

If you are interested in more than one lesson - perhaps you already know that you want to work on a number of different things, shooting techniques, composition, editing etc - then this programme of 8 hours tuition could be perfect for you. I usually recommend that you do between two to three hours at a time and then you go away with 'homework' and projects to work on. At the next lesson we look at your images, discuss what progress you've made and keep moving you along. Many people find this very motivating and they can make great improvements in their ability and confidence over the eight hours.

There will be an additional small charge to pay for lessons at your home or on location (this covers my expenses and travelling time). I will let you know what this is beforehand.

Your tutor

Hi, I'm Jane and I'm a professional photographer and tutor. I've liked photography since I was a teenager but now I absolutely love it! And that's because I am really confident about taking the image I see in my mind's eye. I've learned how to use my camera and other gear, l understand what a huge difference light makes and I know how to use composition tools and editing to create photographs that connect with people.

And it's this knowledge, skill and enthusiasm that I'd love to share with you on this workshop. I clearly remember being a complete beginner, baffled and put off by all the jargon. I promise you'll feel like your camera is your friend by the end of the lesson.
